About 9,500 customers of Public Service Company of New Mexico were without power Monday evening in the Santa Fe and Albuquerque areas, according to the utility's online outage map, as parts of the state were pummeled with heavy rainfall, hail and thunder amid an early May storm surge.Â
Owing to transmission line issues, about 8,000 customers had lost power around 5 p.m. in Santa Fe, including in the downtown area. It was one of 16 outages in the state at that time, many the result of transmission line issues, PNM's outage map showed.
While the map indicated power in each outage area was expected to be restored by 8 p.m., PNM spokesperson Jeff Buell said it was unclear when service would be back online, as crews were out investigating the outages.Â
"We have our standard two-hour window [for power restoration] on our outage map right now, but I would call that number fluid until we know more," Buell said.Â
"Certainly, severe weather, and lightening in particular, are major causes of outages," Buell said. "But it is an assumption at this moment."Â
